2 spaces in 1 Room: Playroom + Workspace

Hey!

I’m so excited to share this DIY workspace/playroom makeover design board with you. I feel very fortunate to have a space where my children can play (and destroy lol) along with a space just for me! I’m hoping the close proximity will allow me to get some much needed me time while also supervising the troop-ettes. I like doing things quality, but on budget, so let’s get this DIY project started!

Here are a few stats about our home before we begin.

  1. We have no attic space. And I mean zero. That means all the extra stuff that would normally get banished up there needs a home.

  2. There are 3 bedrooms in our casa: Our room, our girls room, and a guest room (with a hidden desk in the unused closet in that room lol but that’s another post). We chose to keep the girls room a toy-free zone, as well as the common areas of our home. That means all kid-related things (except clothes and beds) are stored in the playroom.

  3. I am a crafty DIY mom and I keep LOTS of extra yarn, paper, blank painting canvas, boxes, paint, odds n’ ends, as well as the things I use for my business so I need a place for all my crap. I mean… important stuff. And I don’t want to see it sitting out or in a place that my kids can get into it… like it is now.

I want my home to have an overall cohesive feeling, so in the last few years, I have made sure the new items I’m adding still flow with the rest of the house. And also when I re-arrange (which I do OFTEN) all the pieces that can be moved are similar enough in style that they can go in any room in the house! booyah!

For instance: the paint color in the design board is Sculptor Clay from Behr. It’s all over my house, and it’s my FAV greige color. It looks different in all of the rooms it’s in, but still gives my home a unified look.

The room is we’re making over is connected to our living room with double doors in the middle of one long side, and windows on the other long side. One of the short sides of the room has big windows and a door going outside, the other short wall has nothing.

So the workspace is the space getting the biggest change. Here’s the Pinspiration for the workspace…

Soooo dreamy, right? Those natural colors and wood tones…. ooo la la! I just fell in love with that big table in front of the built-ins. I can just see myself pulling out all sorts of things, and then PUTTING THEM AWAY when I’m done! What a concept.

Right now our built-ins are white and I’ll likely keep them white, and paint an accent wall behind them to keep that light, airy neutral feel.

The plan + products

Playroom

My plan is to use an L-shaped couch we bought off of OfferUp for $300 to act as a divider. All we’re really adding on this side is more storage. Both wall and shelves. The only other furniture is their Ikea play kitchen, and my old desk-turned-craft table. And, of course, a playroom is just plain boring without pops of color with accessories!

1. DIY Banner made from leftover fabric / 2. Ikea Wall Shelf / 3. We own a set of courtroom chairs like these / 4. Ikea Shelves / 5. Behr “Sculptor Clay” / 6. Fabric swatch from the L shaped couch / 7. Rugs USA Lattice Shag Rug / 8. Clearance Unicorn head from Hobby Lobby. I added the felt flowers and yarn hair / 9. Pillow covers from Amazon Vera Bradley Embroidered pillow (no longer available), multi & teal

Workspace

I’m calling this a “workspace” and not a home office because I want it to have MANY functions, as well as an office. I’m hoping to extend the built-ins to the edge of each wall to get some much needed extra storage, add 2 work tables in the center of the space for crafting and business stuff, and some pretty gold-ish lamps for a little shine!

>> We used Hemnes cabinets from Ikea to create a built-in look. We plan on adding crown molding at some point to make it look REALLY built in. But, you know. Twins. So that hasn’t happened yet. I’ll post more pics of the built-ins once we get the remaining pieces!

So that’s it! We’ll be shopping at Ikea this weekend to get the shelving, tables, and lamps, and accessories for the space. The rest of the things I’m pulling from somewhere in my home! I LOVE shopping my own stuff cause its free. BOOM!

I’ll be posting updates as we move forward!
